Edison,
Penfield win Class A track titles

(February 25, 2001) -- Julias
Gerald led Edison to the Section V Class A boys indoor track and field title
yesterday at Hobert and William Smith College, placing first in the 300-meter
(35.1 seconds) and the 600-meter (1:23.6).
Penfield
took the girls Class A Championship title with 109 points led by Vanessa
Love-McCarthy's first-place finishes in the 1000 (3:04) and the 1500 (4:49.8).
Charrisse Everett finished first place in the 55 (7.1), the 55 hurdles (8.6)
and placed second in the shot put (31-9 1/2) for Edison.
Newark
took the Class B boys title with 106 points. Jesse Contario led the Reds with
first place finishes in the 1600 (4:37.2) and the 3200 (9:52.9). Walter Davis
finished first in the 55 (6.4), the 300 (36.3) and the long jump (20-7 1/2) for
Franklin. Mike Mellas placed first in the 600 (1:26.8), the 1000 (2:45.1) and
the triple jump (40-8).
Victor
took the Class B girls title with 118 points earned by strong finishes across the
board. Christina Mattice, the only class B multiple winner, finished first in
the 55 hurdles and the long jump (16-6 1/2) for Brighton.
In
Section V Class C on Friday, Hornell boys took its first Championship title
leading the field with 90 points. Byron-Bergen took the girls Class C title
finishing with 116 points.
