record
Democrat and Chronicle
(Sunday, January 13, 2002) -- Andy Wigton of Greece Athena smashed a 20-year-old
Section V record in the 3,200 meter run in the Stanner Games at the New York
City Armory in Manhattan Saturday.
Wigton's 9-minute,
3.25-second run broke Grant Whitney's indoor record of 9:11.1 set in 1982.
Wigton's previous best was 9:17 last year.
It broke the
season's best time in New York state by more than 24 seconds, although he was
second by three seconds.
Coming through the
first 1,600 meters in 4:32, Wigton held the lead for three laps, but Brian
Dalpiaz of Sayville, passed him in the final lap and finished with a 9:00.25.
Both Dalpiaz and Wigton broke the meet and Armory records.
